Why UK did not join the EURO

Interesting stuff here especially about the criteria and about the currency speculators - this caused a big crash and many people I knew lost quite a bit in savings and shares at that point. But the triple lock idea of only joining Euro if Cabinet, Parliament and the Electorate all agree. But again these are issues which are perhaps beyond the comprehension of the electorate. Unless you have a reasonable level of training in understanding economics or currencies, I am not sure this is really something that the general public can be expected to understand. This is why we elect politicians. Many of the public obtain their information from newspapers, but when these newspapers have a strong agenda they are trying to push then the whole thing becomes meaningless. The Euro and the Pound are a lot more than just what they look like, but many will have vague sentimental attachments to their country's currency eg to the Pound or the Franc etc .... but it does not mean that those are necessarily the best to use. What I dont really get is why they couldnt just use local currencies yet set those with an exchange rate against the Euro ... I think the thing is that the exchange rate with external currencies would have to be with the Euro ...

I do know that if Greece had been allowed to deflate their currency as opposed to trying to keep up with Germany by being in the Euro then this would have worked better .... I am sure my terminology is not correct but you probably get the gist ! please email me if you can add any more information !
